What Is Medicare?

Medicare is a national United States health insurance program for people 65 and older. It is also for people with certain disabilities or end-stage kidney failure. This program is divided into various parts, and it’s important to learn how these fit together.

Medicare Part A

Medicare Part A is your hospital coverage. It provides you with affordable inpatient care. It also covers post-hospital skilled nursing and short-term post-hospital home health care, so long as it is medically necessary.

Medicare Part B

Medicare Part B is the medical coverage that gives you access to a variety of outpatient services. Among these are doctor’s visits, laboratory testing, advanced imaging such as MRI or CT scans.

Medicare Part C

Medicare Part C is not a program that you enroll in at Social Security. Instead, it is the official name for the popular program we now know as Medicare Advantage, and it provides you an alternative to traditional Medicare.

Medicare Part D

Part D is coverage for retail prescription drugs. In other words, it’s coverage for the medications that you get from a pharmacy. This voluntary program allows you to access medications at an affordable rate.
